1. Cannabis from coffeeshops is tolerated but has rules — do not consume it publicly everywhere

Cannabis is tolerated (gedoogbeleid) in licensed coffeeshops but not fully legal. Taking cannabis outside the coffeeshop and consuming it in many public areas is not permitted. Rotterdam and other cities have stricter rules than Amsterdam.

Tip: Consume cannabis only in coffeeshops or your accommodation. Do not smoke it on busy streets, near schools, or in parks in many cities.

2. Cyclists have absolute right of way — do not walk in cycle lanes

Dutch cycle lanes are serious infrastructure and Dutch cyclists move at speed. Walking or standing in a cycle lane is dangerous and will result in collision. Cycle lanes are often beside pavements and can look like extensions of the footpath.

Tip: Look both ways before crossing a cycle lane. The red tarmac surface indicates a cycle lane. Cyclists will not stop — move out of the way.
