Auckland, New Zealand
2 laws, restrictions, and customs in Auckland that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.
New Zealand has strict biosecurity to protect its unique biodiversity. Failure to declare food, plant material, or used outdoor equipment (boots, tents) at the border results in on-the-spot fines. All declared items are inspected — undeclared items found by sniffer dogs result in larger fines.
New Zealand surf beaches have dangerous rip currents. Swimming outside the flagged patrol zone significantly increases the risk of drowning. Many beaches are unpatrolled.
