1. Kosovo's independence is deeply contested — avoid the topic

Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's independence and the subject is politically charged. Casually mentioning Kosovo as a country, discussing NATO's 1999 bombing, or taking sides in Serbian political disputes can create tension.
