Verbally insulting a police officer or other public official in Belgium is a criminal offence that can lead to arrest and prosecution, not just a fine. This is more strictly applied than in most neighbouring countries.

2. The linguistic divide is real — default to French in Brussels, Dutch in Flanders

Belgium is divided into French-speaking Wallonia, Dutch-speaking Flanders, and bilingual Brussels. Starting a conversation in the wrong language can cause genuine offence. In Brussels, French is generally the default.
