1. Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok)

The 1897 iron-and-tile market hall at the end of Váci utca — paprika, salami, Tokaji, produce below and craft and langos upstairs.

Best time: Monday 06:00–17:00, Tuesday to Friday until 18:00, Saturday until 15:00; closed Sunday
Cost: Budget–Mid
Tip: Paprika, Tokaji Aszú and Pick salami are the three things to carry home. The ground-floor stalls are cheaper than the tourist-facing upstairs.

2. Váci utca

The main pedestrian shopping street from Vörösmarty Square — chains, souvenirs and cafés.

Watch outRestaurants and bars on and around Váci utca have a long record of menu switching and enormous unexplained bills, sometimes enforced by security. Check prices in writing before ordering, and avoid anywhere that touts on the street.

3. Ecseri Flea Market

The city's great flea market on the southern edge — Habsburg-era furniture, Soviet militaria, porcelain, jewellery and genuine antiques.

4. Andrássy Avenue

The grand UNESCO-listed boulevard — international luxury houses running from Erzsébet Square towards Heroes' Square.

5. Herend and Zsolnay porcelain

Hungary's two great porcelain houses — Herend's hand-painted work and Zsolnay's iridescent eosin glaze, both with flagship shops in the city.
