Sri Lanka has deported tourists who posed in what authorities deemed disrespectful positions with Buddha statues — particularly turning their back to the statue or making inappropriate gestures. Even tattoos of the Buddha on the body have caused arrests.
All Buddhist temples (viharas) and Hindu temples (kovils) require covered shoulders and knees. Shoes must be removed at the entrance. Most temples provide sarongs at the gate.
