1. Posing disrespectfully with Buddha statues is a deportable offence

Sri Lanka has deported tourists who posed in what authorities deemed disrespectful positions with Buddha statues — particularly turning their back to the statue or making inappropriate gestures. Even tattoos of the Buddha on the body have caused arrests.

2. Dress code is mandatory at Buddhist temples and Hindu kovils

All Buddhist temples (viharas) and Hindu temples (kovils) require covered shoulders and knees. Shoes must be removed at the entrance. Most temples provide sarongs at the gate.
