2 laws, restrictions, and customs in Copenhagen that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.

1. Do not bicycle in pedestrian zones or on footpaths

Copenhagen has an extensive, well-marked cycle network. Cycling on the footpath (where not designated) is illegal and will attract sharp comments from Danish pedestrians. Cyclists stick to the left of the cycle lane; pedestrians to the right.

2. Danes queue strictly and value personal space

Denmark has a strong queuing culture. Cutting in line, standing too close to strangers, or engaging in overly personal conversation with someone you just met is considered rude.
