1. Altitude sickness affects most visitors to Cusco and Machu Picchu

Cusco sits at 3,400 m and is one of the highest cities regularly visited by tourists. Most people experience some effects — headache, shortness of breath, nausea — on arrival. Machu Picchu is lower (2,430 m) and easier.

2. Do not remove archaeological items or export without documentation

Removing pre-Columbian artefacts from Peru — even small pieces — is a criminal offence and a serious customs violation. Even buying archaeological items requires export documentation from the Ministry of Culture.
