1. Anjuna Flea Market

The Wednesday market that has run since the 1970s — Rajasthani textiles, Tibetan jewellery, Kashmiri carpets, clothing and music, on the cliffside above the beach.

Cost: Budget
Tip: Almost none of it is Goan — the sellers are traders from Rajasthan, Kashmir, Tibet and Karnataka. Bargain hard; opening prices are four to five times the settling price.

2. Arpora Saturday Night Market

The evening market in the hills behind Baga — craft, clothing, jewellery and a large food and live-music section.

3. Mapusa Friday Market

The proper Goan market rather than a tourist one — produce, chorizo, feni, pottery, spices and household goods.

Tip: Goan pork chorizo, bebinca and cashew feni are the genuine local buys, and this is where Goans get them.

4. Panjim: Fontainhas and 18th June Road

The Latin Quarter's small galleries and boutiques, with the city's practical shopping street alongside.

Watch outCashews are sold loose in tourist areas at several times the shop price and are often mixed grades. Buy graded, sealed packs from a Panjim shop instead.

5. Calangute and Baga beach road shops

The main resort strip — beachwear, sarongs, souvenirs, spices and spirits along the road behind the beaches.
