1. Seminyak: Jalan Kayu Aya and Jalan Laksmana

Bali's designer strip — independent island labels in resortwear, leather, jewellery and homeware, at prices well above the markets and quality to match.

2. Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud)

The two-storey craft market opposite the palace — woven bags, sarongs, carvings, silver and paintings, much of it made in the surrounding villages.

Tip: Open at a third of the asking price and settle nearer half. The same goods are cheaper again in Sukawati market down the road.

Watch out'Hand-carved' is used loosely — much of the wood and silver is machine-produced in Java. Genuine village workshops in Mas and Celuk are a short drive and sell at source.

3. Kuta: Beachwalk and Discovery Mall

The two beachfront malls — air-conditioned chains, surf brands, a cinema and a supermarket, either side of the Kuta strip.
