1. Feira da Ladra

The 'thieves' fair' at Campo de Santa Clara — Lisbon's flea market since the 13th century, selling azulejo tiles, vinyl, colonial-era bric-a-brac and junk.

Watch outAntique azulejos on sale here are frequently stripped from derelict buildings, which is illegal in Portugal and can be seized. Reproduction tiles from a workshop are legal and often better made.

2. Baixa and Rua Augusta

The rebuilt 18th-century grid below the castle — the pedestrian Rua Augusta, historic shops and the Santa Justa lift at one end.
