The 19th-century glass-roofed arcade on Red Square — international luxury, the Gastronom No. 1 food hall and the Soviet-era ice cream still sold in the passages.

2. Izmailovsky Market (Vernissage)

The great souvenir and antiques market beside the mock kremlin — matryoshka dolls, lacquer boxes, Soviet militaria, icons, samovars and carpets.

Cost: Budget–Mid
Tip: Hand-painted Palekh and Fedoskino lacquer boxes are signed by the artist and cost many times the printed imitations. Look for the signature and the village name.

Watch outSoviet medals and 'antique' icons are overwhelmingly restrikes and reproductions. Exporting genuine antiques and religious objects over 100 years old from Russia requires a Ministry of Culture permit.
