Rules to follow in Sydney

4 laws, restrictions, and customs in Sydney that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.

1. Never swim outside flagged areas at patrolled beaches

Australian surf beaches have strong rip currents that kill dozens of people every year. Lifeguards patrol between the red and yellow flags — swimming outside this zone is extremely dangerous. Rips are invisible until you are in one.

2. Seatbelts and car seats for children are strictly enforced

All passengers must wear seatbelts. Children under specific age and height requirements must be in an approved child restraint. Police conduct random checks and fines are substantial.

3. Do not approach or feed wildlife — including animals that appear friendly

Kangaroos, cassowaries, magpies, and quokkas may appear docile but can cause serious injury. Feeding wildlife makes them dependent on humans and is illegal in national parks. Magpies swoop aggressively during nesting season (Aug–Oct).

4. Strict biosecurity — declare all food, plant, and animal products on arrival

Australia has strict biosecurity laws to protect its unique ecosystem. Failure to declare food, plant material, or animal products at the border results in an on-the-spot fine. Fines are issued even for forgotten items.
