Zanzibar, Tanzania
2 laws, restrictions, and customs in Zanzibar that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.
Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba) is predominantly Muslim. Revealing clothing on Stone Town streets, at markets, and on local beaches causes offence. Women should cover shoulders and knees outside resort beaches.
Malaria is endemic in mainland Tanzania and on Zanzibar. Mosquitoes are active year-round but particularly during and after rainy seasons (March–May and November). Risk exists even in Zanzibar.
