The city's great trading market — cloth, food, beads, cosmetics and household goods, run largely by Ghana's formidable market women.

Watch outDense and heavily pickpocketed. Carry a small amount of cash, nothing visible, and be prepared for the crowd.

2. Arts Centre for National Culture

The craft market near the coast — kente cloth, adinkra stamped fabric, drums, masks, beads and carvings.

Watch out'Kente' here is frequently printed imitation. Genuine kente is strip-woven on a narrow loom and sewn together — you can see the seams on the reverse — and costs many times the printed version.

3. Krobo glass beads and Ashanti craft
