2 laws, restrictions, and customs in Jerusalem that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.

Last updated 2026-08-09

1. Dress codes are enforced at holy sites — including the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The Western Wall requires men to cover their heads (kippot are available free at the entrance) and women to dress modestly. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Islamic sites (Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa) require covered shoulders and knees, and women must cover their hair at mosques.

2. Security checks are thorough — arrive early at airports and border crossings

Israel has the world's most rigorous airport security. Expect multiple rounds of questioning, bag checks, and profiling. Ben Gurion Airport security begins before you reach the check-in counter. Allow at least 3 hours for departure.
