1. Alcohol is only permitted on resort islands — it is illegal on local islands

The Maldives is a Muslim country. Alcohol is prohibited on inhabited local islands and can only be purchased and consumed at licensed resort islands and on liveaboard vessels. Bringing alcohol to a local island can result in arrest.

2. Dress modestly on local islands — bikinis are only for resorts

On inhabited local islands in the Maldives, conservative dress is expected — covered shoulders and knees for both men and women. Bikinis, shorts, and sleeveless tops must be changed into before leaving the designated 'bikini beach' on local islands.
