Traditions and customs in Paris

1. Bonjour, always

Entering any shop without saying bonjour is the single most common visitor error, and reads as genuine rudeness rather than shyness.

2. The apéro

A drink and something small before dinner, from about 18:00. A social form rather than a happy hour.

3. Boulangerie routine

Bread bought daily, often twice. The baguette de tradition is a legally defined product and worth the extra few cents.

• Best time: Morning and again around 18:00 for the second bake

4. Café terrace sitting

You are paying for the seat and the time. Nobody will rush you, and nobody will bring the bill until asked.

• Tip: Table service costs more than standing at the bar — that price difference is posted by law, not invented for you.

5. Sunday market

Covered and street markets across every arrondissement, at their fullest on Sunday morning.
