1. VPNs are illegal without government approval — most foreign apps are blocked

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, and most Western apps are blocked in mainland China (the 'Great Firewall'). Using an unapproved VPN to access them is technically illegal, though enforcement against tourists is rare.

2. Photography near military or government buildings is prohibited

Photographing military installations, government buildings, police stations, and infrastructure (bridges, power plants, railway facilities) is illegal. This is enforced strictly, particularly in politically sensitive areas like Tibet and Xinjiang.

3. Register with local police within 24 hours of arrival if not staying in a hotel

Travellers in China must register their place of residence with local police within 24 hours. Hotels do this automatically. If staying with a local host (AirBnB or friend), you must go to the local police station to register.

4. Bring and exchange business cards with both hands

In Chinese business culture, business cards are treated with great respect. Present and receive cards with both hands, take a moment to look at the card, and do not write on it or put it in your back pocket.
