Rules to follow in Kathmandu

2 laws, restrictions, and customs in Kathmandu that travellers often break without knowing — and the fines or consequences that follow.

Last updated 2026-08-11

1. Remove shoes before entering all temples and monasteries

All Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries in Nepal require shoes to be removed at the entrance. The rule is strictly enforced by temple custodians. Some temples do not permit entry to non-Hindus (particularly Pashupatinath's main sanctum).

2. Altitude sickness is a serious risk above 3,000 m

Nepal has some of the world's highest altitude trekking. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can become life-threatening if ignored. HACE (cerebral oedema) and HAPE (pulmonary oedema) can be fatal without immediate descent.
