Tip: Trekking gear here is a mix of genuine brands, licensed Nepali manufacture and outright fakes at three price tiers. For a serious trek, buy from a named shop and check the stitching and zips.
Watch out'Pure pashmina' at Thamel prices is almost always a viscose blend. Real pashmina passes through a ring, feels warm rather than slippery, and costs considerably more.
Tip: Patan is where the serious statues are made. The Patan Museum shop sells certified work and is a useful price benchmark before you bargain elsewhere.
