1. Dress modestly in the medina and souks

Marrakech, Fes, and other medina cities are conservative Muslim environments. Both men and women should cover shoulders and knees. Women in revealing clothing attract persistent unwanted attention.

Tip: A lightweight linen shirt and long trousers works in the heat. Bikinis are only appropriate at riad pools.

2. Same-sex relations are illegal

Homosexuality is illegal in Morocco under Article 489 of the Penal Code, punishable by imprisonment. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples carry serious legal risk.

3. Non-Muslims may not enter most mosques

Unlike Turkey or Egypt, most Moroccan mosques are closed to non-Muslim visitors. The exception is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, which offers guided tours for non-Muslims.

Tip: Admire mosque architecture from outside. A guided tour at Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is well worth the trip.

4. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is restricted

During Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight hours is prohibited and strongly discouraged for non-Muslims. Many restaurants close during the day.
