All women in Iran, including foreign tourists, are legally required to wear a hijab (headscarf) covering their hair in all public spaces. Failure to comply can result in arrest and fines. Enforcement has intensified since 2023.
Alcohol is banned in Iran and cannot be purchased, possessed, or consumed by anyone, including tourists. Bringing alcohol into the country is illegal. Violations result in flogging (for Muslims) or a fine.
Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram (partially), and most Western social media are blocked in Iran. Using a VPN to access them is technically illegal, though many Iranians use VPNs daily. Download one before entering — VPN sites are also blocked.
