1. Grand Bazaar of Tehran

Ten kilometres of covered corridors — carpets, gold, spices, copper, textiles and everything else, organised by trade as it has been for centuries.

Best time: Saturday to Thursday 09:00–17:00; closed Friday
Cost: Budget–Mid
Tip: The carpet section (Bazaar-e Farsh) is the serious one. Tea will be offered; accepting it does not commit you to buying.

Watch outMachine-made carpets are sold as hand-knotted. Turn the rug over: hand-knotted backs show individual knots and small irregularities, and the fringe is a continuation of the warp rather than sewn on.

2. Tajrish Bazaar

The northern bazaar below the Alborz — produce, saffron, nuts, sweets and pickles, smaller and more relaxed than the Grand Bazaar.

Tip: Iranian saffron is the world's best and Tajrish is a good place to buy it. Sold by the mesghal; ask for sargol grade, all-red threads.

3. Iranian Handicrafts Organisation shops

The state craft shops — miniature painting, khatam marquetry, enamel work, termeh and Isfahan metalwork at fixed prices.

4. Palladium and Sam Center, north Tehran

The modern malls in the affluent northern districts — Iranian and international brands, cafés and cinemas.

Tip: International cards do not work in Iran. Bring cash to exchange and expect to carry a great many banknotes.
